NMF: Woody and Paul

May 14th, 2010

The Band Hanging OutOur latest New Music Friday finds us across the great Atlantic with Woody and Paul and the Vigilantes. We first stumbled upon this great band while scouring the web for all things Wicked Woody. One of our searches turned up a video entitled “Woody ~ The Wicked Messenger”. We knew we had to check it out for ourselves… It turned out to be Woody, one of the band’s members on guitar with a haunting rendition of the classic Bob Dylan song,  ”The Wicked Messenger”. You can check it out for yourself below.

Well- after doing a quick search to find out more, this led us to find the band, and the rest as they say is history.

Call them old-fashioned. Woody & Paul are serious about the quality of their music and always hard working. In the last 4 years they’ve been building a stunning live repertoire while releasing 3 albums and 2 EP’s, ranging from pre-war blues and fieldrecorded folk to full on rootsrock. They’re music is hugely diverse, even psychedelic at times, but always starts from a good song, even electric or accoustic. For you virgins it may sound like The White Stripes mating with Sixteen Horsepower while Blind Willie Mctell is left out in the cold.

Want more? You get more!

They toured Germany and played over a 150 shows in the Lowlands, rocking big festivals or howling in a dark church. What else is there to say? Well, not much, or maybe a lot. For instance: they record on tape. Or: they joined Johnny Dowd, Rik van Iersel, Stuurbaard Bakkebaard and Urban Dance Squad members in the almighty Beukorkest, rocking the hell out of every venue they appeared in. And last but not least: they supported Kinky Friedman, Gomez, CW Stoneking, El Guapo Stuntteam and Jack Oblivian at various shows.

We look forward to hearing more from Woody and Paul!

A day in the Life

May 9th, 2010

“A Life In The Day” from John Mayer on Vimeo.

I stumbled across this while scouring the internet for interesting things.  It should be pretty apparent that I have a man crush on John Mayer by now… I am not ashamed.

It’s thing’s like this video that really show not only sincere dedication, but also a desire for creative thought that I find very inspiring.

That is all.

Yet another project

April 15th, 2010

The Black GuitarHere is another project. One that will probably hang there for a little while. I just got bored one day and stripped all of the electronics, down to the wood.

Makes it really hard to practice that way.

How will I ever be better than John Mayer!

The things I should have waited to start

NMF: Statespeed

April 9th, 2010

Our new music feature today comes from the great state of NY. They are Statespeed, and they are prepped to bring their alternative sound to the world.

The band was formed by high school friends Jay Sarle and Chris Schimpf after they graduated from college (very important boys and girls!). Post graduation, they were joined by drummer James Navarra (who rock’s it at the age of 15!)  playing a few shows and recording demo’s out of their home.

In October of last year, the band headed to Washington D.C. to record their album Dreams Begin with producer Bryan Russell. They also added a fourth to their group, Mr. Ted Rosedale to round out their sound.

The groups sound combines soaring guitar riffs, and melodic vocals to create a unique pop-rock sound. Their single “Let Me” shows their excellent song-crafting skills, and their real talent as a band.

We really look forward to hearing more from them in the future.

NMF: A Love Like Pi

March 12th, 2010

First of all, NMF? WTF?

NMF is our “New Music Friday”, an acronym that will stand to the end of time.  From now on, you will be able to go up to all of your friends, and simply say – “NMF”, they’ll dig.

Back to what’s important – New Music.

This week (our first) New Music Artist is none other than the talented A Love Like Pi, which hails from Red Bank, NJ. The band was formed by vocalist Lief Liebmann, and bassist Collin Boyle and later joined by drummer Christopher LoPorto to round out the trio.

It is difficult to categorize the sonic reality of ALLpi (also made that up, cool huh). Their music has traces of surf bum emo pop, yet with the technical riffs and complex synth rolls of an experienced math rock band, and yet they definitely have a good mix of alternative rock swirled about. Their songs and albums also strategically jump from genre to genre in order to provide a solid listening experience. You surely won’t be disappointed.

So what’s with the name? According to the band, “It’s an extended metaphor. Pi goes on forever, it’s an irrational number, people study it to find patterns and there’s the obsessively mystical aspect to it in the math world. Love is the same way. It’s an irrational, eternal emotion which occupies a fantastic place in our psyche.” Well, we say – we love “A Love Like pi” like pi!

The Weekly Wicked Woody Award

March 4th, 2010

In the spirit of awesomeness, we have come up with a new thing here at our little company, the “Weekly Wicked Woody Award“. It’s not really an award, and it has no real clout, and certainly no prize, but it is still very awesome.

This weeks award goes to a recent survivor of the earthquake in Chile, Mr. Alberto Rozas. Mr Rozas and his daughter fell an amazing 13 stories in a crumbling apartment building as it fell down sideways. Both of them survived, and were able to crawl to safety through an open window.

After the quake Mr. Rozas ensured that his daughter was safe with a relative, and then returned to help rescuer’s navigate the fallen building.

Now for the amazing part. Upon returning to the building he was able to salvage a few of his own belongings including clothes, medicine and as reports have it: His GUITAR.

Mr. Rozas, we commend you for your heroic acts of rescue in a time of need, and we support your priority of rescuing your own guitar.
